この手紙をもって僕の医師としての最後の仕事とする。
まず、僕の病態を解明するために、大河内教授に病理解剖をお願いしたい。
以下に、癌治療についての愚見を述べる。
癌の根治を考える際、第一選択はあくまで手術であるという考えは今も変わらない。
しかしながら、現実には僕自身の場合がそうであるように、
発見した時点で転移や播種をきたした進行症例がしばしば見受けられる。
その場合には、抗癌剤を含む全身治療が必要となるが、
残念ながら未だ満足のいく成果には至っていない。
これからの癌治療の飛躍は、手術以外の治療法の発展にかかっている。
僕は、君がその一翼を担える数少ない医師であると信じている。
能力を持った者には、それを正しく行使する責務がある。
君には癌治療の発展に挑んでもらいたい。
遠くない未来に、癌による死がこの世からなくなることを信じている。
ひいては、僕の屍を病理解剖の後、君の研究材料の一石として役立てて欲しい。
屍は活ける師なり。
なお、自ら癌治療の第一線にある者が早期発見できず、手術不能の癌で死すことを心より恥じる。
